A conference organised by the National Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS Control Programme was held in
Hambantota on Thursday, on the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Officials of the programme and senior police officers were present at the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Manjula Rajapaksa, specialist doctor of the national STD and AIDS Control programme, said “we have have identified people who are at a high risk of contacting HIV/AIDS as female sex workers, men who act in sexual activities with other men, and drug addicts.”
Special attention was focused on discussing female sex workers possessing condoms.
This was followed by many views on whether possession of condoms can lead to police arrest.
When Newsfirst contacted Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana, he had this to say:
“In no circumstance is it illegal to possess a condom under the law. But if a prostitute is arrested in a public place along with a condom, trying to entice a customer, it will be presented in court as an article of the case. But under our law, its not considered illegal if a common man or woman is in possession of a condom. It’s just a medical accessory.”
