Another wild elephant in Mattala died after being electrocuted.
Residents say that this situation has arisen due to various
persons claiming lands in the area.
On October 10, a wild elephant that had roamed on the road leading to the Mattala International Airport had caused damage to electricity and communication posts erected along the roadside. Moreover, loss of life and damage to property were also reported from the Hambantota District on a number of occasions as a result of wild elephant attacks.
Another trend that is being reported from this district is increased deaths of wild elephants due to electrocution.
Wild elephants paid the price with their lives, after coming to contact with an electric fence set up around private land. The most recent incident in this nature was reported on Monday night from the Lower Andarawewa area on the road leading to the Mattala International Airport.
This pachyderm died by electrocution after coming into contact with an unprotected electric fence. On November  23, 2013, four wild elephants including a young elephant were killed by electrocution after coming into contact with an electric fence set up around a land in Hadilla , Gannoruwa in Hambantota.
Minister of Wild Life Conservation, Vijith Wijayamuni says that the law will be strictly enforced over reports of harm caused to elephants by unauthorised electric fences.
The Minister added that issues of such nature in Mattala can be discussed at the development committee meeting.
